Today was our Year 6 Prize Giving Assembly where we acknowledged the achievements of our Year 6 students and their ongoing contributions made to the school.

Congratulations to Eden and Jeremiah who both delivered their speeches with confidence and poise.  Their words were motivating and inspiring .

Eden also received an award and trophy for 'Outstanding Contribution' and Jeremiah received an award and trophy for 'Effort Brings Success'.  We also had Marnika receive an award and trophy for 'Leabank Excellence in Attitude'.

We had lots of proud family members adorning their children with lolly and flower leis.  It was such a heart warming day.

Camp At School

Nothing stands in the way of fun!

Cooking s'mores

Wet water fun at the pools

Fashion Parade

Day at the Rec Center

Animal antics at the Zoo

At the Zoo we saw lots of animals.  It got tiring walking around all day.  I saw a cheetah and it looked into my eyes.  It felt like I could reach out and touch it.

We went to the Recreation Center where we learnt lots of new skills.  I was disappointed that we didn't get to play soccer, but it was still lots of fun.  We got to participate in lots of games.

We made s'mores with 2 chocolate biscuits and a melted marshmallow.  We put the marshmallow on a stick and melted it over the fire.  I got marshmallow all over my clothes.

Everyone walked over to the pools where we got to swim on a very hot day.  Mr Maddren came to visit.  He bought us all hot chips and drinks.

Our Leaders

Everyone in Room 21 has been very lucky to have such wonderful students who are always there to help us when we need it.  As Young Leaders you have been super role models not only for the students in our class, but the whole school.  I am very proud of the way you have taken on the role and the way you have stepped up as leaders.  You have set a high standard for future Young Leaders. You have inspired others and you constantly inspire me.

Thank you for all your hard work!

Camping

                School Camp

This term the senior school will be going to camp and having an awesome adventure.  Everyone has been put into groups.  The people in our group will share a cabin and do all the activities together. We will experience new things like rock climbing, abseiling, the mud slide, high ropes course, kayaking and lots more.  We will be leaving for camp next week to have an experience that will blow our minds.  We are feeling excited and a little nervous.  When we come back we get to break the news to people that didn't want to come to camp that we had the best adventure ever!!!

Life Cycle of a Chicken

Lifecycle of a Chicken

There are many varieties of chicken.  A chicken is a type of bird that lays eggs.  The lifecycle of a chicken has 4 main steps.

Rooster and Hen
A rooster is a male chicken and a hen is a female chicken.  The rooster and the hen mate and breed to make chicks.  The hen lays the egg into the nest where she keeps them warm.

Eggs
An egg can be oval shaped.  It is made up of the egg shell, egg white and yolk.  The egg shell is covered in lots of tiny holes that are hard to see.  It protects the baby chick from germs.

Hatching
The hen makes the egg warm by sitting on the egg until it is ready to hatch.  When the chick is ready to hatch the shell will slowly begin to crack until the chick is completely out.

Growing Up
After the eggs hatch the mother hen will have to look after her chicks.  Eventually they will find their own family and the lifecycle will start all over again.

Conclusion
The lifecycle of a chicken is similar to the lifecycle of a frog.  They begin as eggs and then grow.  The lifecycle keeps going and going.

Terrific All Blacks

Rugby World Cup
On the first of November 2015 the final of the rugby world cup was held at the Twickenham Stadium. It was a brilliant game thanks to the All Blacks. They laughed and cheered as joy and tears filled their eyes. As Australia suffered it was a fair loss. Now it's time to say goodbye to the mighty All Blacks who scored all the tries.

Trophy Winners

We are winning I say the trophy is ours,
We can go and celebrate with a happy crowd.
Oh no !!!!!
Its Australia they tried,
However can we see if the mighty All Blacks
Will never die they win and cry.

Becoming a People Saver

Remembering our DRS ABC can save lives!

D - Danger            (Check for things that can harm you)
R - Response         (Squeeze the shoulder and call out 'Can you hear me?')
S - Send for help   (Get help from an adult or by calling 111)
A - Airway            (Make sure the airway is clear)
B - Breathing        (Can you feel breathe on your cheek? Can you see the chest rising up and down?                                    Can you hear them breathing?)
C - Circulation      (Rest, elevate and apply pressure if they are bleeding badly)

First Aid

NZ Red Cross People Saver

On Thursday 29th of October Room 21 learned how to be a people saver by giving basic first aid and assistance to any person suffering a sudden illness or injures affecting their body. There are 6 main steps to follow which are D-danger, R-response, S-send for help, A-airway, B-breathing and C-circulation. The most important one is S-send for help!

We worked in groups and with partners to try it on each person.  It was quite a lot of fun.  As I sat there like a quiet mouse I slightly giggled while my partner was checking me! Later on I got to try it on my partner while my other partner was observing what I was doing.  I was thinking to myself ''What should I do now?"  It takes a little while to get use to remembering what to do.  That's why remembering DRS ABC helps so much.  We practiced opening the airway by tilting the head so the chin is pointing up and using our thumb and pointing finger too.  We had to check our partner was breathing by putting our cheek close to their mouth.  If we could feel them breathing on our cheek and see their chest going up and down we knew they were able to breathe.  Gail showed us how to put someone in the recovery position (side stable position) and then we had a go at doing it too.  Towards the end learnt how to use a cloth to make a sling in case someone injured their arm.  Finally It was nearly time to leave. I was quite proud of all of us working hard so we might be able to help someone else one day.

This is one of the videos we watched about circulation.

Diwali Festival

Diwali

Introduction
On Saturday my dad held a food stall at the Manukau Sports Bowl.  My mum drove us there in or car.  My dad was selling biscuits for $1.99.
His friends set up samples on the front table for people to try.

Food stalls
After 5 minutes I felt hungry so my mum bought dosa to eat. Dosa is a giant traditional Fijian naan bread filled with cheese. I took my dosa over to my dad's stall and my sister and mum went to look at saris .

Performance
There was lots of entertainment on different stages.  At the front of the stage there was a dance competition.  This gigantic break dance group were preforming and they did back flips and the qwan. People were cheering for the dance group and they won!

Editing A Sentence

We have been working on making our sentences more interesting by adding and deleting information. We are trying to identify nouns and verbs and add adjectives and adverbs to construct sentences that are interesting to read.

Today's attempts:

Me and my family went to the pools.

My family and I drove to Mountford Park pools.

Our family visited Mountford Park pools for an awesome and exciting swim.

Me and my family drove safely to Mountford Park in a pocket-sized car.

My family and I travelled by a blue car to the colossal pool at Mountford Park.

My family and I travelled by a blue and white bus to get to our destination which was Mountford Park pools.

My family and I went swimming at Mountford Park pools and travelled there by a giant black car that was zooming around the park.

Our Tama Toa Exam

Tama Toa Exam

On the 23rd of September Levi and I had our Tama Toa exam. Mr Maddren, Mrs Crompton and Whaea Raewyn came to watch and also some of the Year 5 students. We began with a karakia and a blessing for the tiaha.  The exam was an awesome battle of defence, strikes and counter strikes.  At the end Matua Phillip gave out the certificates and announced who had earned the taiha.  We were both really excited.  I was so proud when he announced me as the winner!

Coding and Cyber Safety

Room 21 has been learning about online safety and coding. For coding Mrs Pasirio gave us a URL link and our secret code or picture. We entered our URL to link to a page with your name and other names of people in our group. When we clicked on our name and typed down our secret code or picture it would take us to our first hour of code. A video clip showed and the tutorial began.  It explained the basic skills of computer programming and how to use certain commands to control the Angry Bird or zombie.

For online safety we had to get in three groups and go on an app called Poplets and type down what online safety means to us.  Then Mrs Pasirio handed out two sheets, one sheet was to highlight the keys words and the other sheet was for us to rotate around so we could write down our opinion of what we think about the questions on the sheet.  We had four minutes on each station before we had to rotate until we all had a turn at answering each question. After break we watched a video clip about cyber safety and online strangers. It was about a cat called Professor Garfield telling us about not sharing our YAPPY. Your YAPPY is your full name, address, phone number, passwords and your plans, so that means that you can share your hobbies and other things you enjoy as long as you don't give away your YAPPY. It was fun learning about online safety and coding because we will be already prepared
so we know how to keep safe from strangers online, when we make an account and when we might become a famous online person from all our coding.

BOOK WEEK is HERE!

Fathers day

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!

Sunday 6th of September was Fathers day. My dad was filled with joy when my sister and I said happy Fathers day. It was so cool because there was a big breakfast on the table for him. After he finished breakfast we had to quickly get ready to go out shopping. First we went to check the Why Not Stop Shop really quickly to hunt for bargains. We came out with 2 humongous boxes and a couple of little boxes. As we were heading to Manukau  my cousin and I were singing like nobody's business. As we were walking into Hallensteins we searched as if it was a scavenger hunt to find the right suit for my Gang Gang, but sadly their was nothing for his type. The lady said to my Nana to check Farmers. As we were walking into Farmers we were searching for the right aisle. My cousin and I saw some children our age playing with these funny cards that sang songs about how yummy and tasty they were. The accent of the cupcake was hilarious. The icing of the cupcake was vibrating. After that my cousin and I were looking for my Nana and sister. When we saw them we got told off and told to go to the car. When we went home we gave my dad and Gang Gang their presents and they were so happy. For dinner we had a giant B.B.Q to celebrate Fathers Day.

Our Trip to MOTAT

MOTAT
Did you know MOTAT stands for Museum Of Transport And Technology? On Friday August  the 28th Rooms 21, 19 and 16 went to MOTAT to see and learn about simple machines such as a wedge, screw, wheel and axle, lever, pulley and inclined plane. My favourite place was the village and the school because my group and I were acting like we were working at school and in the jail we were faking cutting our head off.

Lazer Maze
When it was time to go to the Lazer Maze there was a long line of people queuing up to gain entry. Only 2-3 people could go into the Lazer Maze at one time.  It was one of my favourites because it was like I was a thief that was robbing a bank and I had to get to the other side to get the money. It felt like there was a fire in the room of lazers, it smelt like smoke and steam and it looked like lazers moving in circles and smoke everywhere floating like lily pads on water.

Get Smart Exhibition
After our group finished on the playground we went to a big aged brick building that was like a grand library but it was not a library. When we walked in the sliding door we saw a long, narrow plastic pole that was filled with air. We kept on walking and as we got further in we saw a massive circular screen covered with grids filled with photos. When I took a picture with Joseph the small screen was scanning our faces then it showed a big picture of us like we were famous people on tv.

Conclusion
Durring our class lesson at MOTAT I learned that a screw can also be a lid on a bottle, and a wheel on its own is not useful because it needs something to keep them together and help them move in the same direction like a Wheel And Axle otherwise it's not a simple machine.
